Enterprise-E there are hundreds of tiny decals spaced all over the ship that give it a real sense of function and scale. Starship fanatics may have noticed that on the studio models of the U.S.S. After modeling and texturing, the next step is detailing.

Thankfully, our higher-detailed models made it easier to have a smoother application of these textures. Once those structural changes were done, we began updating how the textures on the models were applied to the model, a process called вЂњUVing.вЂќ During this process we tried to make sure the вЂњdensityвЂќ of the texture was more evenly laid out on the hull, a concept called вЂњtexel density.вЂќ It can be challenging to apply a 2D image to a 3D surface, especially with complicated shapes that you find on a Star Trek starship. That process involved smoothing edges to make round shapes feel more smooth, adding borders to places where two elements met to create a sense of structure, and adding trim around contrasting panel areas to give these sections definition. Building the new material gave us the foundation to then start updating the models. This seems counterintuitive but with the way Star Trek Online ship models use tiling materials, it means that we can employ materials that can be used on any ship while still including a lot of ship-specific detail that is вЂњcutвЂќ into the model in a way that was impossible before. Over the last decade, we have shifted away from low-detailed models and high detailed textures to the opposite: highly detailed models with textures that have less detail. As technology has advanced, so has the gameвЂ™s ability to support more detailed textures and models, and thus the older models required a lot more effort to bring them to the desired level of quality.Д«efore we did any work on the models, we actually started by creating a new hull texture. Some of these 25th-century designs were almost six-years-old, and others had been done in the last year or so. The process of remastering these ships varied greatly depending on the age of the model and how much detail it already had. The goal with these changes was to be able to put these STO-era starships next to our remastered Galaxy or Intrepid class and have them both co-exist with a similar quality and attention to detail. This meant that we could remaster some of our favorite 25th-century designs, and in addition, create some new variants to add variety to the updated Terran Imperial Fleet. In the Mirror Universe, the 25th-century Starfleet would be the вЂbad guysвЂ™ and we could set aside time to make sure their ships were up to snuff since they would be featured in a long story arc. We wanted our STO-original designs, starships made with our signature style, to match the fidelity and detail we had been able to imbue in the starships from Discovery and our recent Legendary ship remasters. This was the perfect time to address the quality gap between our older вЂњmodernвЂќ Starfleet ships and the remastered classic canon ships we had more recently released. And so, when we decided that the plan for our next story arc, Reflections, was going to be the Mirror Universe, we got excited. But this has left a gap in quality between the newly-remastered вЂњcanonвЂќ starships and some of our older вЂњSTO-OriginalвЂќ ships we created to be the technological evolution of canon-fan favorites. StarfleetвЂ™s modern ship language uses sleek silhouettes and high contrast hull plating to create an even more futuristic look for its starships.Д«eginning with our Age of Discovery update, we found ourselves building starships to an ever-increasing level of detail, and over the past few years have remastered many of our fan-favorite вЂcanonвЂ™ ships to an unprecedented degree of fidelity.

Star Trek Online builds on that language and pushes it forward to 2409.

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager depicted Starfleet starship design over the course of the 2360s and 2370s. Not only has the STO team recreated ships featured in Star Trek shows and films, but we have also developed a unique language for what starships look like in the second decade of Star TrekвЂ™s 25th century, when most of the gameвЂ™s action takes place. Over the course of its life, the game has added hundreds of ships to playersвЂ™ fleets.

For over eleven years, Star Trek Online has allowed players to boldly go into the 25th century as a massively multiplayer manifestation of the Star Trek Universe.
